LOCATION

Mallacoota is only 3½ hours drive from Canberra and 500kms from Melbourne, the last town on the coast in Victoria before the NSW border.

The weather is generally milder here than in Melbourne, the heat of summer tempered by sea breezes and the winter cold warmed by runs of glorious sunny days.

The town is bounded by the ocean and Croajingolong National Park. Croajingolong runs along a 100kms of rugged wilderness coastline and diverse hinterlands, and includes Mallacoota Inlet – a lake system of about 25 sq kms. This pristine park is World Heritage listed and a World Biosphere Reserve.

Though surrounded by protected wilderness, Mallacoota is a well established township with supermarkets, a chemist, a newsagent, cafes and restaurants, golf and bowling clubs.

The Entrance at Mallacoota

The easily accessible bushlands, water ways and coastline of Mallacoota reflect the diversity of the surrounding National Park: eucalypt forest, heathlands, pockets of rainforest, lakes, rivers, long stretches of white sandy beach, a host of rocky coves with their own secluded beaches, and a great variety of birds and other wildlife.

The lake system provides a fabulous array of small coves and picnic spots with jetties for boaters, and plenty of space for waterskiing.

The surf beach at Bastion Point, with its views of Gabo Island and across the sand bar to the islands in the Bottom Lake, has life guards during the peak summer season. Or you can swim in the wide river mouth at Betka Beach, an ideal sheltered swimming spot for young children.

Whatever kind of holiday you need, in the tranquil peace of this pristine environment there are limitless opportunities for positive, recuperative rest or inspiring action. There’s so much you can do, but it’s also a perfect environment for laying back and taking stock.
